Three years in the making, Callaway’s Hyper X driver addresses the needs of
less consistent players by enlarging the effective hitting area across the
entire face. That area is the largest of any Callaway driver, which is really
saying something considering how forgiving the company’s products are. The
innovation is a parabolic shaping of the wall thickness that is supposed to
improve ball speed.
Our launch-monitor tests backed up the claim. On the
course, testers noted that the ball indeed seems to fly off the face with a
satisfying, powerful impact sound. “This club seems just as forgiving as the
square FT-i but with a more traditional shape,” says a 12. A Tour version
with a slightly more open face is also available.
Last word: Somehow, Callaway keeps introducing drivers that are more
forgiving than the previous version.
